Why inadequate supports for Texans with IDD comes with high risks and a high price tag

When Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities receive the individualized supports and services they need, they’re able to make choices about where they want to live, the career they want to have, and the community in which they wish to live. But not all Texans with IDD have access to these essential resources and face the possibility of institutionalization.

Congregate care settings like institutions—where COVID-19 can spread easily and rapidly—are high-risk places for contracting the virus. Plus, research shows that people with IDD who contract COVID-19 are at a higher risk of death than others with chronic health conditions.

When it comes to expenses, institutional care in Texas costs on average over $25,000 a month. This is six times the cost of individuals staying in their own community.
