🚨 Advocate for Robert: Submit Comment on Criminal Procedure Article 11.073

We want to inform you of an important opportunity to provide input on criminal procedure related to capital punishment and new science writs under Article 11.073 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. The House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence will hear invited testimony, including testimony from Robert Roberson, an innocent person with autism on death row whose execution was delayed thanks to significant advocacy from both Republicans and Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives, and many of you.

The Arc of Texas is supporting the Autism Society of Texas, the Innocence Project and other disability rights partners in this effort. Thank you for your continued advocacy and support in promoting justice for people with IDD.

What's Happening

Article 11.073 allows for the consideration of new scientific evidence in post-conviction cases, which is crucial for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who may face unjust sentences, including capital punishment. Robert Roberson’s case illustrates the need for robust legal protections and procedures to ensure that people with IDD have fair and just access to the justice system when new evidence surfaces. Your voice can help strengthen these protections.

How You Can Help: Two Ways

Share your thoughts and experiences by submitting a comment through the Texas House Public Comment Portal. Your input is essential in ensuring the system works fairly for everyone. Feel free to use the suggested language below when submitting your comments. (Note: In the portal, under "Comments regarding," select "Criminal Jurisprudence October 21, 2024 - 12:00 PM [E2.010], Criminal Procedure Article 11.073." You don't need to enter a bill number as there is NOT one.)
Call Governor Abbott at 361-264-9653 or send a message online to encourage him to grant clemency to Robert Roberson.
