Disability Pride Month coincides with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a federal civil rights law passed in July 1990 that guarantees people with disabilities have the same opportunities in life as everyone else. It also served as the foundation for the Olmstead Act, the landmark Supreme Court decision that deemed segregation based on disability a violation of the ADA. In case you missed it, Veronica Ayala, a tremendous disability rights self-advocate and The Arc of Texas' Public Policy & Advocacy Committee Chair and Board President-Elect, shared her story in this STAT article commemorating the 25th anniversary of Olmstead.

Five $1,000 stipends are available to local chapters of The Arc of Texas to offset the cost to attend The Arc of the U.S. National Conference (Nov. 1-3). Awardees will be notified by July 29. By July 18, inform kpham@thearcoftexas.org of your interest.
