The Arc of Texas and The Arc of Greater Beaumont meet with Texas
House Speaker Phelan
The Arc of Texas CEO Jennifer Martinez, The Arc of Texas President Gary Hidalgo, and The Arc of Greater Beaumont CEO Sarah Hardin met with Speaker of the Texas House Dade Phelan and his staff on March 2, which was also Texas Independence Day. The group discussed solutions to enhance the lives of Texans with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (IDD), including ways to better include Texans with IDD in their communities by providing quality supports and services. Speaker Phelan also received a painting, which he is pictured holding, by The Arc of Greater Beaumont member, artist, and self-advocate Ashley Sattler.
Make sure Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities are part of the conversation. Now is the time to let legislators know who you are, who The Arc of Texas is, and what’s important to you. Share our easy call-to-action form with your members and network. You can also share our Facebook post or tweet. The Arc of Beaumont's relationship with Speaker Dade Phelan started long before this session, and is a great example of how consistent and meaningful communications can make a big impact.
Draft legislation was released yesterday in the House and Senate to make
access to home and community-based services accessible to all, eliminate waiting lists, require states to ensure direct support professionals are paid a fair wage, and allow an individual's Medicaid-funded services to remain in tact regardless of whether the individual moves to another state. This is an exciting development for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and allies.
DSHS partnering with Tarrytown Expocare Pharmacy to provide COVID-19 vaccines to Texans with
IDD
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is coordinating with Tarrytown Expocare Pharmacy, which specializes in serving people with IDD, to provide vaccinations for Texans with IDD and their caregivers. The plan is to provide 20,000 doses across 37 temporary clinics around Texas.
Vaccine clinics for March 18 and March 19 have been released. While we do not have information on how to make appointments, we do know walk-ins are welcome. We will continue to provide information as soon as we receive it, so you can spread the word about clinics that might occur in your area.
